Patrick COQUELIN is our transformer expert, providing consultancy services and training throughout client in specification, design, construction, testing, failure investigation and condition assessment of Power and Distribution transformers used for both industrial and supply utility applications.

Patrick has over
40 years’ experience, working in Europe (8 years), South America (1 year), Africa (3 years), Asia (6 years), Middle East (22 years) and for companies including ALSTHOM SAVOISIENNE, GEC ALSTHOM, ALSTOM, AREVA T&D and AGECO.
Our Transformer Expert has also traveled to more than
50 countries over the course of his career. He has traveled to every single continents on earth besides Antartica.

Has more than 40 years of experience, manufacturing, testing and R&D departments in field of expertise, transformer repair, refurbishment and exerting his knowledge worldwide.

  • September 2008 – Present: Consultant Engineer.

    Started own Transformer Consulting Company to provide independent Engineering Services, relating solely to Distribution, Power Transformer and On Load Tap Changer products, covering all aspects of Design and Manufacturing Technology.

  • Projects completed to date include:

    • Court Hearing:

      • Provision of Consultancy Services.
      • Preparation of Witness Affidavit.
      • Participation on the Court Hearing as Witness.
    • Fault Investigation (End user, OEM, Insurance, Loss adjuster):

      • Power and Distribution Transformer Service Failures to determine Root Cause and appropriate repair processes for OEM, industrial, supply utility and loss adjuster companies.
      • On Load Tap Changer Service Failures to determine Root Cause and appropriate repair processes for OEM, industrial, supply utility and loss adjuster companies.
      • Bushings >132 kV Service Failures to determine Root Cause and appropriate repair processes for OEM, industrial, supply utility and loss adjuster companies.
    • Oil Regeneration at site:

      • Development in collaboration with MAXEI (Oil Treatment Plant Manufacturer in France) of process for oil regeneration at site to eradicate corrosive sulfur.
    • Utilities and industrial users:

      • Development of new Power Transformer repair Technical Specifications.
      • Technical Evaluation of Tenders for both new transformers and transformer Repair and refurbishment projects.
      • Contract Design Reviews at Power Transformer manufacturers.

  • 2000 - September 2008:

    Power Transformer Service Manager for AREVA T&D, DUBAI / UAE.

    • Settling the transformer service activity in Middle East.
    • Responsible for the Management of Development, Sales and Marketing functions including Tender Submissions and Contract Administration for the transformer service departments which include the maintenance of power transformers and the repair or refurbishment of existing power transformers.
    • Specific responsibilities include development of high-level relationships with major Customers to ensure that opportunities are maximized in capturing the future projects.
    • Determine market segmentation and develop marketing strategy to service total market but ensure product is sourced from local and regional AREVA T&D Companies.
    • Identify Competitor market penetration and monitor production capacity and delivery commitments of all Transformer Manufacturers.
    • Reinforce Customers perception of AREVA T&D being the most technically competent supplier and implement a strategy where Customers contacted us as primary supplier of product and services to satisfy their requirements.
    • Responsible for technical Support to Middle East and South East Asia.
    • Mastering a specific process for transformer repair at site.
    • Main technical achievement, more than 300 transformers successfully repaired at site, including winding replacement on power / rectifier transformers.
    • Nominated Transformer Expert by AREVA T&D organization.
  • 1999 – 2000:

    Project Manager for major projects in Tanzania and Cuba for ALSTOM / AREVA T&D. Service Department.

    Responsible for management of local unit with ultimate responsibility for achieving budgeted costs and timely delivery of refurbished power transformers at site.

  • 1994 – 1999:

    Project Manager for two major projects in Singapore and Thailand for GEC ALSTHOM.

    Responsible for management of local team with ultimate responsibility for achieving budgeted costs and timely delivery of new power transformers.

  • 1984 – 1993:

    Working in after sales department at various positions - ALSTHOM SAVOISIENNE factory, Saint-Ouen, FRANCE

    • Person in charge of the activity to repair power transformer & On Load Tap Changer worldwide.
    • Preparation & optimization of the quality plan, process, procedures.
    • Preparation and provision of presentations relating to the power transformer.
    • Training maintenance crew from major utility (EDF) and industrial in France and in overseas to the maintenance of Power Transformer and On Load Tap Changer.
    • Site supervisor for the erection, testing & commissioning of power transformers. Work mainly carried out in Africa and Middle East.
  • 1982 – 1984: Student Apprentice – ALSTHOM SAVOISIENNE factory, Saint-Ouen, FRANCE

    The industrial training encompassed all phases of design, procurement, manufacture and testing of Power Transformers up to 600 MVA, 800 kV and On Load Tap Changer Manufacturing & Maintenance.
